Great question! I typically recommend that you rule out physical health conditions first before you come to me. Chronic illnesses such as anemia, absence seizure disorder, and diabetes can sometimes masquerade as ADHD. There may be other physical health conditions that can initially appear to be ADHD or autism as well - as I am not a medical professional, I am not able to assess for these issues. Please check with your doctor to make sure that these are assessed for and treated, if you have them. If you are negative for these chronic illnesses, or they are well-managed and you feel as though you are still experiencing symptoms that are mental health based, then you can schedule an assessment with me!
In my assessments, I'll ask you questions about your family history, your life growing up and in the present, and how well your current needs (such as eating, drinking water, sleeping, etc.) are being addressed. We'll also figure out if there's anything that is happening alongside autism or ADHD (if one or both fits for what you are experiencing) or if you're experiencing a mental illness that can act like autism or ADHD. I also include cognitive ability assessments for all ages, and academic ability assessment for those 16+, as needed.
I understand that assessments can be costly, and at the current moment, I am only allowed to accept a few insurances. Those insurances are Aetna, Cigna, and Evernorth. Once I am a fully licensed clinician, I will be able to accept more insurances. Otherwise, you can pay via card, check, cash, or an HSA/FSA.
In the last session of the assessment, we will discuss what best fits the experiences you are having, and I will provide you a diagnostic letter to use with other professionals and recommendations for treatment moving forward. Additionally, my assessment may determine that these diagnoses don't fit your experiences - if that is the case, you will still receive a recommendation letter regarding follow-up treatment. I understand that the assessment journey is hard and many people find comfort in being able to identify and label the experiences they are going through.
